Family Day - Different Day, Better Quality Time.

February 14, 2019

One month into the New Year and where has the time gone? Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months, and before we know it, half of the year is over.

We spend much of our time working, cleaning, volunteering and getting the kids off to school and other extra curricular activities. Quality family time can be difficult to find in our busy schedules—but that is why Family Day exists!

This year marks the first time that the Provincial Holiday will land on the third Monday of the month, helping to coincide the event with the same date of other provinces throughout Canada.

The Province of BC has announced an increase in funding this year so that  everyone has an opportunity to take part in free community activities with their loved ones.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture increased funding by $100,000 for 2019, which was provided to BC Recreation and Parks Association ($250,000) and the BC Museums Association ($50,000) for administration of Family Day grants on behalf of the Province.

This funding supports grants of up to $1,000 for various community organizations throughout B.C. to support free events.

In addition, the Province has provided funding to the     Royal BC Museum ($40,000) and the Vancouver Art Gallery ($10,000) to support the cost of hosting free events.

Local Community Centres will be hosting some of these events. On February 18th both Britannia Community Centre and Trout Lake Community Centre will take part in entertaining families with free family skates, arts and crafts, music, artist performances and more.

Details are available online, and through my community website at www.shanesimpson.ca
