Dear Mayor Robertson and Councillors,
I am writing regarding the truck traffic situation along Nanaimo street in Vancouver. As you are aware, residents of the area have become increasingly alarmed over the increased amount of container truck traffic on Nanaimo now that the Clark Drive entrance to the Port has been closed. Residents have expressed their concerns about noise issues, possible vibration damage to their properties, excessive speed, and the safety of pedestrians, particularly of school children, in the area. They have also expressed their frustration that there was no consultation on these traffic changes surrounding Clark Drive and their potential impacts.
It is my understanding that the Port is not considering re-opening the Clark Drive access which leads many in the community to believe that the container truck traffic on Nanaimo street will continue to be heavy and potentially unsafe if action is not taken.
On behalf of my constituents I am writing to ask the City to actively work with the Port to expedite a workable solution to this problem that includes a plan to reduce the container traffic levels on Nanaimo. I would urge that this plan be put in place prior to the resumption of school in September when there will be many more children in the area.
I will be writing to the Vancouver Police Department to request that they take a look at increasing their traffic enforcement efforts as a short term remediation along that route particularly to address allegations of excessive speed. I would ask that Council also make that request of the VPD.
